New for 2025, MasterLeague has added a pairs challenge ladder with the option for players to change both their mixed and same-sex doubles partners each quarter. Moreover, pairs ladder matches do not affect players' skill ratings such as their GPN or DUPR rating.
MasterLeague uses a bespoke points formula which is able to be adapted to different formats. For the pairs ladder, the formula is applied such that players need not seek out the best possible partners, as the points awarded to each pair in a match will be different based on the average rating of their opponents as well as the total number of points won.
Factoring in the average opponent rating rather than the average of all players on the court:
if one fixed pair is rated an average of 0.5 lower than their opponents on the Player Skill Ratings scale (say 3.5 and 4.0 respectively), they will earn about the same ladder points if they win two-thirds as many game points (e.g., 14-21).
if one fixed pair is rated an average of 1.0 lower than their opponents on the Player Skill Ratings scale (say 3.5 and 4.5 respectively), they will earn about the same ladder points if they win one third as many game points (e.g., 7-21).
Each pair will be able to play against any other given pair for up to three games, whether as a single match or in discrete games.
Players are able to arrange matches privately or take the opportunity to play ad hoc to time during organised events.
It will be possible for players to be in more than one pair - for example, both a men's or women's and a mixed pairing.
Remuera Rams are the 2024 champions for the HUSTL Auckland Pickleball Premiership, after defeating the West Lions team 3-1 in the final on 19th November
Meanwhile, South Auckland took out the plate final, arrowly beating East Auckland, the match going to a tiebreaker after ending 2-2 in normal play.
Minor premiers the West Ace Tigers secured bronze with a gutsy win over the Papatoetoe Warriors, who finished 4th.
Teams are already plotting their campaigns for the HUSTL APP 2025 which is believed to have an additional 3 clubs entering, thus expanding the 2025 competition to 10 teams.
Remuera Pickleball Club director, Ritchie Okesene, said he is proud, honoured & humbled to have hosted the inaugural & first ever Interclub Premiership in New Zealand.

Henderson Squash Club will officially become the fourth club to hold a MasterLeague pickleball event when its inaugural round is held on 2nd November.
The club's MasterLeague calendar has now been added to Global Pickleball Network here.
To register, players need to set up a DUPR account and a Global Pickleball Network account, and then link the two by viewing their GPN profile page and going to the DUPR section.
MasterLeague results update DUPR and GPN player skill ratings, with the former part of the MasterLeague points system. This system has a yardstick reference of 100 points.
MasterLeague rounds consist of four or five players on each court according to their ability, rotating partners for each game. The players winning the most or the least total game points on their court are promoted or relegated to a higher or lower court if there is a second round immediately after, while the MasterLeague Points System, which is updated after the event, allows a player on a lower court to to earn more league points than someone on a higher court, depending on their comparative performance. This is because MasterLeague points are derived from both the player's points tally and the average DUPR rating of the players on court.

12 September, 2024
After spending term 3 of 2024Â testing its ladder formula on the East Auckland local league, MasterLeague is finally ready for launch in October.
The first events have opened for registration. Covering singles and doubles, MasterLeague builds upon Auckland's oldest and most successful pickleball league, which has been running out of Panmure and Ellerslie since 2021 under the Pickleball East Auckland banner.
Now MasterLeague aims to bring multiple clubs together, starting with the addition of Browns Bay Pickleball, Pickleball Henderson, and Favona Pickleball Club.Â
Doubles and singles leaderboards will be based on a points system formulated to be intuitive yet reflective of players' ability and performance regardless of how often they can participate.
This delicate balancing act will be under the spotlight in Q3 as players report results from different venues and earn points depending on a range of factors, from the average player rating on court to points won and their overall track record to date.
This has never been attempted before, and further changes will be made for the 2025 series if necessary. For now, visit www.masterleague.nz for more information and to find out how to participate.
7 September, 2024
The Pickleball Auckland Central Club has changed the entry criteria for its 2025 annual tournament to simplify qualification and help clarify its target audience.
Originally the Auckland Seniors Tournament, it was recently renamed as the Masters Tournament, but the latest update is sure to avoid any confusion with the Masters Games, which is on around the same time and is for players 20+. Likewise, Senior status in terms of club membership is often open to players 18+, so this should put the matter to bed.
Sixty-five is surely the new sixty, so check out the revamped tournament under the Events page.

Pickleball Auckland has long had a vision for an app that can provide just the right functions for social and competitive play, and we have been pleased to have the co-operation of developers in implementing some of our requests, especially the Matchup app on iOS. However, one feature we are as yet still missing to have is balanced games made up of players more than one or two grades apart.
A handy enthusiast Web page called Pickle Shuffle attempts to do this with enough match feedback by factoring in players' points tallies when generating each court. It also considers which players have previously played together, so it could provide a good balance of variety and well-matched groups. However, the proof is in the pudding!
The site is pickleshuffle.com. We have also set up a temporary version with a different layout and some additional notes at lobby.nz (site expires early September), so anyone can try for a month depending on their device size and aspect ratio. The latter is intended for testing purposes due to text and header size issues with the original layout.
During an initial trial in "up next mode" (replacing one court at a time rather than playing timed rounds) we found it could leave out one player for several rounds, so our next trial will be using timed rounds to replace all courts at once and see if that helps.
Also bear in mind that you need an Internet connection. The reconfigured version at lobby.nz is designed to work on phones as well as laptops and tablets. The player names have been enlarged to help groups see their names without glasses or from further away, too.
In short: use at your own risk, but please use contact form for feedback as to whether you have an issues, and we will pass on your comments.

As viewers watch the likes of breakdancing and equestrian and wonder when will pickleball become an Olympic sport, the right answer might not be that it will be just a matter of letting its inexorable growth bring it in by brute force.
As the King of the Court website notes, pickleball's main issue is an administrative one. For a start, Olympic rules require a recognised worldwide, non-profit governing body. Considering the number and makeup of the sport's existing, sometimes self-appointed, bodies, it seems there could be a long way to go for pickleball yet. New Zealand's current governing body, the PNZA, is aligned with the Global Pickleball Federaiton.
While pickleball won't be at Los Angeles 2028, we can at least enjoy NZ's participation in one of the "world cups" this year, to be held in Peru in late October?.

Pickleball East Auckland became the first club this year to defeat Pukekohe in its Golden Paddle Challenge inter-club series. The Potatoheads were on home soil at Franklin Pools & Leisure Centre but finally succumbed to the challengers after four close rounds.
Auckland's pickleball scene is highly informal, using shared facilities and seldom consisting of formal clubs or incorporated societies, and the same players can be found at multiple venues - so forming a team under the Challenge rules, which forbid players representing more than one team in the same year, can be daunting but results in strong team spirit. A poll on the Pickleball East Auckland Facebook page determined the team name, which was suggested by its top player who was also appointed captain. The club also held a team practice and kept to some of the familiar combinations from its in-house league series.
Much has been made of the benefits of belonging to a club or group, including a new Guardian article here.

USA Pickleball has provided an update on its withdrawl of approval for certain Joola-branded paddles. Newly submitted versions have since failed the testing process, and will not be approved.
USA Pickleball is the sport's governing body in the US, but its rules and decisions are often adopted by other bodies and countries, including in New Zealand.Â
The cusioned hardcourts of College Rifles Sports Complex, home of Remuera Pickleball Club, are almost done with their resurfacing and should be ready for play between 7-10 June.
The courts are best played using an outdoor ball such as the Franklin X40. We can't wait to give it a try!
Keep an eye on the home page for session time updates.
Following his Auckland MLP stop win for the Northern Crocs, pro player Neilson Chen has since performed this incredible block at another event, and it is being hailed as a new level in the sport following the Erne (and thus the Bert was named for the backhand version on the other side of the court). Unfortunately there is a a Nasty Nelson, but could this perhaps be named the Cheeky Chen?
In case you haven’t watched them, you may still be able to binge on all 6 episodes of this infomercial-cum-documentary for free, at least for the time being pending re-distribution.
The club's term 1 holiday programme is now underway. Check the home page calendar for dates for school holidays, including any changes to regular sessions. ANZAC Day may see some changes, in particular possible cancellation of morning sessions.
